Letting loose my inner troll

Back in 2008, I gave some money to Barack Obama. I know, dumb me, right? But someone of my acquaintance gave money to Ron Paul -- I didn't object to that, exactly, but I felt I needed to counteract it.

I unsubscribed from all the Obama mailing lists a long time ago, or so I thought. Today, for the first time in years, I received an email from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee:

Elizabeth --

First we learned that Mitt Romney wanted to "get rid of" Planned Parenthood.

Now, there are news reports that Republicans in Congress will oppose re-authorizing the Violence Against Women Act.

Enough is enough! The Republican War on Women must be stopped NOW.

We must raise $17,581 more by midnight tonight to double-down on our Women's Health Accountability Fund.

Will you chip in $3 by midnight tonight to hold Republicans accountable for their War on Women?

We will not be silent about Republicans' radical assault on women's health. Your support will be immediately put to work with targeted ads, on-the-ground organizing, and rapid response research.

Americans deserve to know that Mitt Romney and Republicans in Congress are willing to put women's lives in danger.

Can we count on you right now?

Thanks for standing with us.

Now, I wasn't much fazed by this -- I had some trollish thoughts, but mainly I thought oh, I got myself on a mailing list and forgot to unsubscribe, let me go do that. So I went and clicked the unsubscribe link.

And this is what I got:

Republican SuperPACs and right-wing media pundits are out to defeat President Obama and Democrats nationwide.

We need you with us.

However, if you’d only like to receive our most urgent messages (about one e-mail per month), you can enter your e-mail address here:

Wait.

Wait just a FUCKING MINUTE.

Your "unsubscribe" link is more like a "unsubscribe EXCEPT WHEN WE FEEL LIKE DOING EMAILS" link?

Oh. It. Is. ON.

Dear Jennifer,

As an advocate of violence against women, I'm afraid I can't support your movement. We should all be destroyed; the criminalization of abortion and the legalization of violence against women, though not nearly enough, will go a long way toward achieving that goal.

By the way, if I click a link that says "unsubscribe," I should not be taken to a page that tells me I can opt for one email a month. This does not make me feel any more kindly toward my sex.

Love and kisses,
Elizabeth
